Veteran Benefits Guide

Veteran Benefits Guide

According to the Veteran’s Administration, just over 31% of U.S. Veterans are aged 65 or older. As they navigate their healthcare benefits, long-term care plans, and end-of-life issues, those men and women who served our country may find themselves needing services themselves. Hospice of the North Coast is a We Honor Veterans Level 5 certified provider, and we have prepared this overview of resources for our local Veteran community and their caregivers to consider when planning for the future.

Securing Benefits for Aging Veterans and their Caregivers

  • Before a veteran can access benefits, they must first enroll and establish care with the VA.
    • Apply by mail, in person or online at https://www.va.gov/health-care/apply/application/introduction
    • Call the VA at 877-222-8387 for further assistance
    • Have your tax/financial information, health insurance information, and DD214 discharge papers (copy can be requested online) available when applying
  • Once enrolled with the VA, it is important to establish care with a VA physician and Social Worker.
    • San Diego VA Medical Center, La Jolla Ph: 858-552-8585
    • Escondido VA Clinic: Ph: 760-466-7020
    • Oceanside VA Clinic: Ph: 760-643-2000

Programs for Assisting Veterans and Caregivers

  • Aid and Attendance
    • Program for ongoing financial support to offset cost of in-home caregiving or placement in a care facility
  • Homemaker/Home Health Aid Program
    • Program for provision of in-home caregivers via contracted agencies
  • Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers Program
    • A program of supportive resources including training, respite, counseling, and financial support for caregivers of eligible veterans
