You can donate without using money today! Did you know that you can make a significant donation to your favorite charity without spending a dollar today, and that this gift can be transformational to the charity? Even better, right? So how do you go about making this impact without breaking the bank? The answer is: Make a “Planned Gift.”
What is a Planned Gift? Without getting too technical, a planned gift, also known as a deferred gift, is a gift made to your favorite charity after you die. Simply put, you plan today to give tomorrow. A planned gift can be money or another asset that you don’t use during your lifetime that you designate to charity upon your death. It can be a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or another asset.
Examples of Planned Gifts There are some planned gifts that allow for an income to the donor during their lifetime (i.e. charitable trusts and annuities), but let’s stick to the most basic of planned gifts that can be easily made to your favorite charity.
- Cash
- Life Insurance
- Personal Property
- Real Estate
- Retirement Plan
How do I make a Planned Gift? Making a planned gift is easy. Gifts of can be made through your will or trust using simple bequest language as shown here. You can give a percentage of your estate, a specific dollar amount, specific property, even the residual of your estate. You can also name your favorite charity as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan.
Why should I make a Planned Gift? Planned giving provides you with an avenue to make a larger and more impactful gift than you ever thought possible. Not everyone can afford to make a large outright gift during their lifetime, but through planned giving you can provide for your loved ones and also make a tremendous impact on the causes important to you.
