An Open Heart
September 24, 2013I Am At Peace
September 24, 2013Celebrating 70 years of married bliss on September 29, 2011, Loren Palmer, 99, still knocks his 98-year-old wife Edna’s socks off.
Their socks, and much of this blissfully happy couple’s apparel, are purchased at HNC’s Resale Shop located in Encinitas, the Palmers’ home since 1947. Spiffily attired in great bargains (“This pantsuit was just $15!” Edna exclaims. “I have a closet full of slacks!” declares Loren.), they wow folks at the Encinitas Senior Center, where they regularly lunch.
The Palmers’ Great HNC Resale Adventure began several years ago, when Loren’s daughter suggested he donate his too-tight sport coat to support HNC’s spectrum of services provided to all, regardless of ability to pay. Loren left home with his old sport coat and returned with a “new” coat and a dapper suit. That did it! They became Resale Shopaholics.
Once, Edna needed a dress for a wedding. She recalls, “I took $100 and shopped the mall, but couldn’t find a dress at that price. I thought, ‘If the good Lord wants me to have a dress, it will be there for me at Hospice.’ I found the perfect one for $29!”
The Palmers prove that love, like generosity, is … always in fashion.
