Ray Taylor Nominated 2011 Volunteer of the Year
October 1, 2013HNC Receives Grant from The San Diego Foundation
October 1, 2013Carlsbad, CA … Dale Condy, John Gram and Andrew Maffia have joined the Hospice of the North Coast (HNC) Board of Directors. According to Board Chair Bobbie Hoder, “Each offers exceptional professional expertise, a valuable personal perspective and a heartfelt commitment to HNC and to those we serve.”
Dale Condy and his wife, Linda, have owned and operated Gems of La Costa in Carlsbad since 1989. A GIA
graduate gemologist, he began his jewelry career while in high school in 1965, working part-time at a family-owned store in Chicago. Condy attributes his success to his philosophy “to do business on a win-win basis” and plans to apply his business acumen to his work on HNC’s Board. He already is serving HNC’s Resale Shop by assessing the value of jewelry donations.
Condy relates, “I know many HNC Board members and hold all of them in the highest regard. I hope to use my own network to help further the work of this important organization. There is no owner’s manual for life, but hospice is as close as it gets in terms of an owner’s manual for this final transition.”
Biopharmaceutical professional John Gram is president of Oceanside-based J.T. Gram & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in the commercialization of oncology therapeutics, diagnostics and supportive care agents. Prior to founding his own firm, Gram held key positions at such companies as Ligand, Amgen, Biogen Idec and SmartAnalyst. He has led teams responsible for the research and development of noted oncology products.
Gram states, “Social awareness and volunteering have been part of our family fabric for many years. After my son Ken’s murder in 2009, I made a commitment that I would honor his memory by spending even more time giving back to the community. After investigating a number of volunteer opportunities, I found Hospice of the North Coast. The mission and high caliber of personnel made me realize very quickly that HNC was right for me.”
Andrew (Andy) Maffia, CPA, is senior manager at AKT LLP, a CPA and business accounting firm specializing in nonprofit organizations. AKT LLP is one of the top 100 accounting firms in the U.S., with offices in California, Oregon and Alaska. Based in the Carlsbad office, Maffia handles many aspects of client operations and procedures. He also develops and teaches training workshops.
Saying that he is excited to join the Board of HNC, in which he has been involved on a business basis since 2003, Maffia confides, “Hospices have helped my family transition through the loss of loved ones. I have heard heart-warming stories from families HNC has helped and feel good to be able to be a part of that process. I intend to continue making HNC as financially transparent as possible so the public can see what an outstanding organization this is.”
HNC Executive Director Nerice Kaufman states, “We are fortunate to have a Board of Directors comprised of strong community leaders from an array of fields offering proven expertise, immense skills and genuine dedication. With these three new members on our Board, we are well-positioned to advance our programs and services so we can continue to expand and meet the growing needs of clients, families and the community.”
Nonprofit Hospice of the North Coast was established in 1980 to fill the need for comprehensive, compassionate hospice care in North County San Diego. Since its inception, it has grown in services, staff and clients; it currently provides a full spectrum of programs to terminally ill clients and their families, including bereavement support. To fulfill its mission of maintaining dignity, comfort and highest quality of life for those it serves, regardless of ability to pay, HNC hosts fundraising events, operates a family support camp and resale shop, and maintains a cadre of volunteers.
