Palliative Care and Hospice Care: Understanding the Difference
February 6, 2018About Pathways Palliative Care Program
February 13, 2018More than one million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. Almost a half million of those people will eventually die from the disease. Cancer has a serious impact on society in the United States today, and understanding what you can do to prevent it is the key to remaining healthy.
- Avoid Tobacco Use of any Kind. One of the best steps you can take is to avoid tobacco. Smoking tobacco has been linked not only to lung cancer but also other cancers like bladder and kidney cancer. Chewing tobacco has also been linked to oral cancer and pancreatic cancer. If you don’t use tobacco, living with someone who smokes could increase your risk of cancer.
- Eat Well. Healthy eating has been linked to a decreased risk of cancer, so paying attention at mealtimes could be pretty important. Make certain you base your diet around fruits and vegetables. If possible, limit the processed meats you choose to eat, and at all costs, avoid obesity.
- Consider Exercise. Physical activity of any kind has been shown to lower the risk of some types of cancer. Your goal should be to get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity. Take a class, go for a walk, or participate in an activity you love.
- Cover Up When You’re Outside. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer than any other type, and it’s also fairly preventable. Avoiding the midday sun whenever possible is one great way to stay healthy. Sunscreen and avoiding tanning beds that simulate sunlight can also help.
- See a Doctor. Schedule regular exams and screenings as suggested by your doctor. Skin cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer can all be detected through routine checkups, and the earlier the doctor finds a problem, the sooner treatment can begin.
Cancer may not be preventable, but there are a few preventative steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from some types of cancer.
