Terminal Illness 101: What You Should Know About Hospice
May 7, 2018What You Should Do When Your Loved One Stops Eating
May 7, 2018Obviously, there are times and situations that call for a person to do something, even when it may not be in their best physical- or mental interest. Caregiving for a dying loved one is very often one of those circumstances. It is important, though, to understand the impacts that can be suffered on physical and mental health when going through such an ordeal, so you can do your best to prevent the worst of them.
Unfortunately, many caregivers wind up in the hospital or at the doctor’s office themselves, because of the wear and tear that they suffer while caring for someone else. Some of the biggest issues that can arise and lead to medical problems during the caregiving process are:
- Sleep Deprivation This is very often due to concerns about how the terminally ill will fare overnight. This added to the grief can make sleep very challenging. Too little sleep, though, can greatly weaken the immune system and mental capacity of the caregiver.
- Poor Diet Everyone has heard the news stories, read the articles, or been warned by a doctor about the dangers of consuming the wrong foods. A bad diet puts one at much greater risk of many common illnesses and diseases. Yet, when caring for someone else, it is easy to fall into the habit of eating very poorly.
- Failure to Exercise It is important to get out, to exercise your body and your mind, even when caring for a terminally ill loved one. It is not always easy to make time for yourself when caring for someone else. Failing to exercise, though, can make you more prone to injury and illness, making it harder or impossible to properly care for your loved one.
- Failure to Rest During Illness Not getting enough rest is always a danger to your health, but this is particularly true when you have a cold, flu, or bug of some kind. It is essential that you give yourself time to heal, particularly when someone else is depending on you.
- Failure to Keep Doctors’ Appointments If you are sick or require ongoing care for something, be sure that you are scheduling and keeping those necessary appointments. Again, caring for yourself is the only way to ensure that you can properly care for your loved one.
