Why is this important?
Older adult falls: A growing danger
The concern: According to the CDC, and older adult falls every second of every day. That is 29 million older adult falls every year. 24% of those falls (7 million) required medical treatment or restricted activity for at least a day. Theses falls threaten the health and independence of older adults and result in high medical costs across the U.S. healthcare system.
More than 1 out of 4 Americans 65 and older fall each year, resulting in over 3 million emergency department visits annually. According to the CDC, The medical costs due to senior falls is estimated to be over $50 billion per year in the United States.
1 in 4 older adults reported a fall, yet according to a recent Medicare study, indicated that less than half of the Medicare beneficiaries who fell in the previous year talked to their healthcare providers about it.
The great news is that the vast majority of falls can be prevented!
